Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Hauntings: From Beyond

By
Nathan Garvin

Few mortals are more familiar - and more wary - of the Fade and the entities that dwell within than The Mourn Watch, but familiarity breeds contempt for danger, a shortcoming even the necromancers of Nevarra aren’t immune to. When one of their own becomes a threat, The Mourn Watch aren’t sentimental, and send an outsider to deal with the problem. This page will provide a walkthrough for the side quest "Hauntings: From Beyond" iconHauntings: From Beyond in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Page Breakdown

Starting Hauntings: From Beyond

To start this quest, complete the main quest The Siege of Weisshaupt, then travel back to the Necropolis, where new problems have cropped up. Talk to Myrna and she’ll give you this quest.

Talk to Myrna after completing “The Siege of Weisshaupt” to start this quest.

Defeat The Lost Explorer

One of the quicker quests in the “Hauntings” questline - you don’t have to venture very far, as your target is within the Necropolis itself! Make your way north from the central hub room where Myrna, Vorgoth and the rest of The Mourn Watch are gathered and you’ll stumble across The Lost Explorer before long. This off skeleton - armed with a two-handed axe and bearing a cumbersome device on its shoulders - might not look like much at a glance, but it’s a surprisingly tenacious foe. He’s got the following attacks:

  • Running Sweep: The Lost Explorer will charge at its target, dragging its axe, before performing a sweeping underhand strike with its axe.

  • Leaping Chop: A leaping overhand chop, often used against foes who have been knocked down/back by another attack. The Lost Explorer can also use this as a stand-alone substitute to the Running Sweep, however.

  • Necrosis Puddle: If you see a red reticle appear on the ground, move - The Lost Explorer can create a necrotic puddle at this spot. It can do this during other attacks, so treat this as more of an environmental hazard than a proper attack and stay wary.

  • Whirlwind: The Lost Explorer will spin in a circle several times, axe extended.

  • Axe Frenzy: The Lost Explorer will perform a series of vicious axe chops, advancing after each swing. If you dodge it may follow up with a Leaping Chop.

The Lost Explorer only deals moderate damage when it hits with most attacks, but it makes up for this in two ways: first, it inflicts a stack of Necrosis every time it lands a hit, and two or three ticks of this will sap your health very, very quickly. Second, The Lost Explorer is very aggressive, unrelenting, even, and has a few multi-hit attacks that can really pile on the Necrosis stacks, like its Whirlwind attack and Axe Frenzy.

Fortunately The Lost Explorer does have some weaknesses worth noting. It’s vulnerable to necrosis damage, oddly enough (and resistant to cold), and most, if not all, of its attacks can be parried. This foe does a lot of delayed windups before its attacks, but once you get the timing down you should be able to parry almost everything it throws at you, which will make fighting it a lot less troublesome. At this point in the game you should also be able to spam abilities for damage and iframes regularly, and if you bring companions who can heal along, you will probably be able to outheal its damage, necrosis or not.

(1 of 3) The Lost Explorer doesn’t hit tremendously hard, but he inflicts necrosis stacks after every swing.

Defeat The Lost Explorer and loot the chest it drops for a piece of gear (our mage Rook got the "Smiling Visage" iconSmiling Visage helmet), then talk to Myrna to complete the quest. Vanquishing The Lost Explorer will net you 350 EXP and Myrna will further sweeten the deal by coughing up 400 gold and +250 Mourn Watch Strength. She’ll also pass on the next quest in the “Hauntings” questline - ["Hauntings: Shadows of Fortune" iconHauntings: Shadows of Fortune].
